Korea’s Comfort Dish: Tteokbokki Easy Recipe

What is Tteobokki?

Tteokbokki, a Korean street food favorite captures the hearts of many with its enticing combination of spicy, sweet and savory flavors. This delicious dish showcases chewy rice cakes coated in a red sauce and boasts a long standing heritage tracing back, to Koreas royal courts. It serves as a comforting delight cherished by individuals of all generations. This dish is incredibly tasty, full of flavors, and has a deliciousness that makes it hard to resist. You’ll be drawn to these rice cakes even when you feel too full because they’re just so tempting! 😉

Rice cake as the main ingredientIngredients to use for Tteokbokki

Ingredients: 

  • 1 cup Rice cake
  • 1 tsp Gochuchang
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • Half onion (sliced)
  • Green onions (sliced)
  • Half cup of water
  • Sesame oil
  • Cheese

How to make Tteokbokki:

Boiling the rice cake

Step 1: Soften the Rice Cakes. If the rice cakes are refrigerated or hardened, boil for about 10-20 minutes to soften them up.

Preparing the sauce

Step 2: Prepare the sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce, sugar, gochujang, and chilli powder. Mix well until the sugar is somewhat dissolved.

Washing the rice cake

Step 3: Check the rice cake if it’s already soft then drain the water and wash the rice cake with cold water so that it’s not so sticky.

Saute onion and add the sauce

Step 4: Add the sliced the onion, sauté for about 1 minute, then add the sauce, add water and rice cake. Lower the heat to medium and add the sauce mixture to the pan with rice cakes. Stir well to evenly coat the rice cakes with the sauce.

Mixing it all together

Step 5: When the sauce has thickened, add the cheese and melt it to your liking. Then, add a little bit of sesame oil and top with green onions.

  3. Tteokbokki is one of my most loved korean foods. I always look for it on the menu whenever I go to korean restaurants. Thanks to this vlog, now I already know how to cook tteokbokki anytime at home. I customize the dish by making it a bit more watery and spicy. It’s funny that I used to stir fry the rice cake until I learned from this vlog that I should’ve boiled it instead, because mine turned out hard and not as chewy as it’s supposed to be.
