Dev blog week 2

Wednesday 22.11.2023

At the beginning, we had an input on art styles, how to help players find their ways in games and also how to increase difficulty.
We started our team work with a little recap from last week. Then we went on to collect our tasks for today, which mainly focus on making more decisions on art style and creating our prototype. After a quick priotization, we discussed what object we need in our game, and what general technique we’ll use for creating our sprites. We decided that we will go for Pixel Art, as this helps us create a consistent style. We also agreed, that our main character is a badger. As our game is intended to be top-down, we discussed this as well and agreed that we will go for a 3/4 perspective.
After these discussions, we agreed to finally start in Unity. We had a little session on how to organize our work and how to work with Git.
After the initial setup, we discussed with Sebastian and were able to get some valuable feedback from Sebastian. His main points were: How do we communicate, what the player has to do? What is the focus of our game? Is it puzzle, exploration or should it be fast paced?
We did not decide on these topics yet, but we noted them down so we can figure it out while testing our prototype.
In Unity, we created some basic building blocks of our Maze as well as a Triangle for our player character. Then we proceeded to implement the basic movement as well as some camera effects.
We also started to create some basic sprites so we already have some art.

Thursday 23.11.2023

The morning began with input from some of our lecturers on their everyday experiences in game development. These inputs certainly showed that it is not always easy and that you have to make some compromises. For the afternoon, we split up our work in order to make more effective progress. Angelika and Laura got to grips with pixel art and started drawing the characters (badger and mushrooms) in pixel art. Jan and Stefan, on the other hand, continued programming and built the maze grid in Unity. They also fine-tuned the pc movement so that it works smoothly.

Friday 24.11.2023

At the beginning of the day, we received input on the topic of audio and sound. We will certainly have to think about this topic as a group at a later date. After a brief update on the work within the group, we continued to work with full energy, as there is still a lot to do. We defined our color palette for the game. Angelika and Laura continued to work on the characters (choice of colors, shadows, animations, etc). In addition to the characters, we also made the design for the path on which the main character will walk. Stefan and Jan mainly took care of the implementation of the graph and the path way systems.
Our goal has not yet been reached, and we still have a long way to go. But thanks to teamwork, motivation and passion, we are optimistic that our game will offer a hypnotizing gaming experience. We are looking forward to the final days of development.
