Cannon Painter

The theme that we had to pursue for the prototype 2 was „Wrong Tool“.

Brainstorming

We got about 5 tools in before the words „paint a room“ and „bomb“ fell. Obviously we had to do something with these so we went through some ideas and landed on shooting paint from a cannon to paint a big object.

Problems

We did encounter some problems during the prototype.

We used transform instead of quaternions to move the cannon so even when we locked specific axis-movement, that got overwritten. Since it’s a prototype we didnt bother too much about performance and just added a quaternion overwrite into the Update function.
We also used decals to project the paint onto the Castle model which means that at least for the time being, the colors stack in a weird hierarchie way instead of newest on top.

Where we are so far

The current state of the prototype is quite fun to play I would say, though you don’t really have an objective yet.
You are constantly rotating around a castle in the middle, can change colors and shoot that color as a paint bucket at the castle or trees that are standing around. You also have some pocketmoney and a budget. Every bucket of paint is 200$ so you will have to be thoughtful about using them.

Future

If we ever decide to pick up on that prototype, we’d like to add a train that you can use to drive yourself around on so you have more control over where you paint. that would also allow for a multiplayer, friendslop kinda game by adding more wagons and giving everyone something to do.
More levels, cannon balls and cannons would be really cool as well. For levels you can literally place anything there from a castle to a horse to a giant banana, the weirder the better I would say.

Thanks for reading this blog about a prototype made by Mauro, Matthias, Benny and Ralph.
