„Am I Allowed to Use ChatGPT & Co in My Assignments and if So, How Do I have to Indicate It?“
This is a question that bothers students, researchers and teachers alike. The underlying question is more fundamental: How can AI tools be used and documented in such a way that the use complies with the principles of academic integrity?
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is currently working on establishing rules and regulations for the use of generative AI in the context of studying for a degree. The position paper on dealing with generative AI from the Center for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF) provides an outlook on future rules and regulations.
The basic rules and regulations of the university will be adapted by each department in respect to their needs. If you are unclear about the legitimate use of Ai tools, please speak to your supervisors.
Statements and Regulations of the Departments of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts
Department of Social Work
In Fall 2023, the Department of Social Work adopted guidelines for the use of AI in written assignments (in German). The guidelines are updated at regular intervals, the latest version is available on MyCampus.
Department of Computer Science
At the Department of Computer Science, we view AI tools such as ChatGPT as innovative resources that can support learning and research. We encourage the exploration of these tools. However, it is crucial to view the results of these tools with caution and process them carefully. Be sure to check the claims and find appropriate sources that can be properly cited. (ChatGPT and similar tools can only be used as a primary source in exceptional cases).
If you decide to use generative AI in your work, you must indicate this in a transparent way, for example in the methods section or in the introduction. Also bear in mind that citing ChatGPT & Co. in your work should only be done with justification and after consultation with your supervisors.
Department of Design, Film and Art
The guideline (in German) of the Department of Design, Film and Art was published in January 2024. In sum, it can be said that the use of AI tools is allowed, but proof of origin is required if ideas in one’s work were created with the help of AI. In addition, students must be aware that they are fully responsible for the content of the work submitted and that AI is not considered an academic source.
