„Am I Allowed to Use ChatGPT & Co in My Assignments and if So, How Do I have to Indicate It?“ This is a question that bothers students, researchers and teachers alike. The underlying question is more fundamental: How can AI tools be used and documented in such a way that the use complies with the principles of academic integrity?
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is currently working on establishing rules and regulations for the use of generative AI in the context of studying for a degree. The position paper on dealing with generative AI from the Center for Learning, Teaching and Research (ZLLF) provides an outlook on future rules and regulations.
The basic rules and regulations of the university will be adapted by each department in respect to their needs. If you are unclear about the legitimate use of Ai tools, please speak to your supervisors.
Instructions and Regulations of the Departments of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts
Department of Social Work
In Fall 2023, the Department of Social Work adopted guidelines for the use of AI in written assignments (in German). The guidelines are updated at regular intervals, the latest version is available on MyCampus.
Department of Computer Science
At the Department of Computer Science at HSLU, we see AI-supported tools such as ChatGPT as innovative support in studies and research. We encourage you to explore these tools – for example when structuring ideas, formulating texts or as a stimulus for your own research.
But caution is advised: AI-generated content should never be adopted without checking. Make sure that the statements are correct and always rely on verifiable, citable sources for your academic work. (AI tools such as ChatGPT are not considered primary sources – direct citation is only permitted in justified exceptional cases and after consultation with your supervisor).
If you use generative AI in your work, transparency is crucial. Clearly describe which AI-based tools you have used for which purposes – for example in the methods section or in the introduction. You can also create a tabular overview of the AI tools used, as shown in the following example:
Take a look at the recommendation (in German) from Mainz University of Applied Sciences. There you will find further suggestions for declaring the use of AI.
Our tip: Clarify with your supervisors at an early stage the extent to which the use of AI is permitted – and how the use should be documented.
Department of Design, Film and Art
The guideline (in German) of the Department of Design, Film and Art was published in January 2024. In sum, it can be said that the use of AI tools is allowed, but proof of origin is required if ideas in one’s work were created with the help of AI. In addition, students must be aware that they are fully responsible for the content of the work submitted and that AI is not considered an academic source.
