Using AI-Based Tools Sensibly

Despite the hype surrounding AI-based tools, their potential applications must be assessed realistically. The performance of these tools is still limited, which is why it is important to always scrutinize the results. If in doubt, statements generated by AI should be checked by conducting your own in-depth research.

Furthermore, in the interests of academic integrity, it is essential to transparently disclose when AI tools were used and where and in what form this support was provided. You can find more information on this topic at Using AI at HSLU.

Application Examples for the Sensible Use of AI Tools
The following examples illustrate how AI tools can be used sensibly in various work steps:

    • Finding search terms: AI tools help to identify suitable search terms for literature searches by suggesting relevant synonyms or related terms.
    • Overcoming writer’s block: AI-supported text generators can provide formulations or ideas to kick-start writing processes and overcome blockages.
    • Rephrasing: AI can help with the rewording of texts to improve comprehensibility and expression or to achieve a certain style.
    • Finding inspiration: AI tools provide inspiration, for example for research topics or the creation of a table of contents, by providing new approaches or structural suggestions.
    • Discussing different points of view: By using AI tools, different perspectives on a topic can be simulated, which helps to look at a topic from different angles.
    • Creating summaries: With the help of AI, longer texts can be concisely summarized to quickly get an overview of the main points.

But be careful, the following instructions should also be carried out when using AI tools:

    • Critically evaluate AI-generated texts: AI-generated content often appears convincing but can be inaccurate or superficial. Therefore, always check the content for relevance and accuracy, and revise it accordingly. Never rely on having entire sections or papers written by AI.
    • Always check sources yourself: Always verify AI-generated indications of sources yourself, as they may appear genuine but may not actually exist.
    • Consider limited access to academic sources: Even if internet-enabled AI tools (e.g. Bing or ChatGPT from model GPT 4) can find and specify real sources, they often only search freely accessible content. Paywall-restricted articles are usually not included.
