The development concept for the Gurzelen area envisages the creation of a new quarter. According to the goals of a high-quality densification, the former football stadium and the adjacent training grounds as well as today ‘s Gurzelenplatz are to be replaced by superstructures with mainly cooperative apartments and a new public square. The design in the Gurzelen area is based on a development concept that was drawn up on the basis of the results of an urban planning competition held in 2014. The city of Biel is not only the planning authority but also the owner of the entire area concerned. This gives it every opportunity to promote high-quality development.The scope of the development to be designed is project-specific. In view of a sustainable use of the resources still available, the site should be exploited as effectively as possible, both in terms of urban design and of surface area.
