How to sell your clothes online – Part I

There are many platforms to sell your clothes online. Find out how it works and which platform suits you best.

Last week’s blog post was about selling clothes at a flea market or in second-hand shops. Maybe you wondered if this is also possible online? Yes, it is! And that is what this week’s blog post is about: Sell your old clothes online. For this, I have picked out a few platforms that might be suitable for you. Of course, I tried some of them myself. Watch my short video below, which shows how I sold my clothes on Depop (one of the platforms mentioned below). By the way: I used the Konmari method to clear up my closet, which Stella explained in her blog post.

There are many second-hand platforms available, but which one should you use? Tutti and Riccardo are probably the most popular in Switzerland. But there are also many other platforms that are particularly suitable for selling second-hand clothes. In the following, you will find a small selection of them. Which one suits you best?

Mädchenflohmarkt
If you want to sell high-quality designer clothes, this is the right platform for you. For a commission of 40% of the sales price, the platform even takes care of photographing the garments and uploads them to the online marketplace. If you do everything by yourself, the platform charges a commission of 10%. So far, this platform is only available in Germany. According to media reports, however, the service will soon be available in Switzerland as well.

Kleiderkreisel
Kleiderkreisel is a platform from Germany but is now also used by people from other countries. If you use the app, you can offer your clothes for sale with just a few clicks, and the whole process is very simple. The platform can be used free of charge.

Kleiderberg
Kleiderberg is a Swiss platform. Here you can easily create your own shop and offer your articles for sale. If someone buys one of your items, the platform charges a commission of 20% on the selling price. Kleiderberg also provides a pick-up service. This includes picking up the clothes at your home, taking photos, and offering them for sale on the platform. In this case, 80% of the selling price goes to Kleiderkreisel.

Depop
Depop is a peer-to-peer social shopping app. The company is based in London, but the platform is used worldwide, also in Switzerland. Depop is mainly used by younger people. You can sell all kinds of clothes on it, whether designer pieces or fast fashion clothes. Watch the video below to see how it works. It is very easy!

  1. Hi Anja,
Lovely video! I am definitely curious about selling no longer used clothes through one of the platforms suggested now. Thank you for your hints and the step-by-step guidance. I am looking forward to your next posts!
    Cheers, Corina

    1. Hi Corina, thank you for your comment! I’m happy to hear you’re gonna try this.

  2. Hi Anja, thanks for sharing these insights, especially into the Swiss platforms. I have never heard of Depop but it certainly looks like worth giving it a try and I loved the simply tutorial.

    1. Thank you Katharina, it is definitely a simple way to sell your old clothes. In my next post, I will share some tips on how to be successful on such platforms. Hope you will like it!

  3. What a great tutorial! You took really great photos of your clothes, I think that really helps. How long on average would you say you have to wait until someone buys your clothes? Does it depend on what type it is (e.g. winter clothes probably don’t sell that well in summer)? Do you ever have an item online for so long you decide to drop the price?

    1. Hey Olivier, thank you for your comment. To be honest, I have taken a break from selling on Depop because it is very time consuming. To sell successfully on Depop there are a few things you should follow (e.g. reposting, offering several things for sale, etc.) but so far I haven’t had much time to build up an active profile (but I will during the semester break). And of course it also depends on whether you are ready to ship abroad, then you will of course be able to sell your clothes much faster. I think it is not always necessary to lower the price, because people will ask you for a discount anyway if they are interested in something you offer. I hope this helps 🙂

  4. Thanks for your useful insights, Anja! I was actually thinking about getting rid of some old winter clothes so I will definitely check out these platforms!
